Why a lactating / mother's room?
Lactating / mother's rooms are private facilities where lactating mothers can either feed their babies or pump milk to feed their babies with later. These are generally lockable rooms that feature comfortable surroundings and possibly equipment to help with nursing or pumping.
While different states have different laws, some states require that businesses provide lactating / lactation rooms for mothers. California’s lactation room law, for example, requires that businesses that make over $500,000 a year or have over 50 employees must provide a non-bathroom lactation room for lactating mothers. Considering that California is often a trend-setter in state laws, and that there are movements all over the country among mothers pushing for lactating rooms in businesses and public places, providing a lactating room is going to be necessary for many businesses and governments in the future.
But besides just simply considering law, having a lactating / lactation room is beneficial for mothers who want to feed their own babies. Many mothers simply prefer to feed their babies themselves. They want their babies to enjoy the health benefits of natural milk, and they want to enjoy the psychological connection and resulting well being between mother and child. Providing a lactating room for mothers who want to be able to feed their own babies helps maintain their peace of mind and their sense of belonging if they are employees at your business. Being able to provide for their child without the stress of worrying about when they will feed their baby will greatly contribute to their psychological well-being and make them more effective employees.
